Hi, I'm a fresh High school graduate. I'm planning to take Software Engineering. What other specific fields does my course stretch to? Also, I am having second thoughts of whether I'd survive my course because I rather have a weakness in Math. I have a natural inclination to the arts and music and I'm also very fond of dissecting our computer *software wise*. I really want to pursue a career in Engineering but I still have doubts. Any advice?

Hi Jazz! First, congratulations on graduating high school! It's great that you are considering continuing your education in a technical field where women are underrepresented! Earning an undergraduate degree in software engineering (or computer science) means you'll be learning about computers and computational systems, their theory, design, development and application. You will take classes in learning programming logic, different programming languages, algorithms, computer networks and security, computer system architecture, operating systems, database design, etc. There are many different areas you can choose to focus in once you know where your interests are. Engineering is as much about having a good work ethic and dedication to your studies as it is about applying science and math to the real world. Don't doubt your abilities until you try them out! If you are interested in arts and music, I suggest either minoring in those areas or joining clubs and other activities so you can still have a diverse educational experience and pursue all of your interests. It's very common for students to change their major, so there is no need to worry! Good luck! -Victoria Yan Pillitteri

7 Steps to Healthy Weight Loss, Without Dieting ¶ August 19

Misinformation about weight loss abounds, and anyone who's tried to diet knows it. We begin strict diets with the best of intentions, but they ultimately result in feelings of failure as we boomerang back to our original weight, or -- even worse -- gain more.
